The township incorporated as a borough in 1960. The village of Industry was a settlement in the township laid out in 1836 by William McCallister, though a post office had been established in 1833. Industry was once the home to the first general store along the banks of the Ohio River between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Industry was home to an archaeological dig in the 1960s along the Ohio River between Barclay's Crossing Bridge and Merrill. Native American remains were found.
